Active Learning Generates Immediate Results

Written by Suzanne Conroy, M.Ed., CTI, ICF

Have you ever sat through a training session or workshop, diligently taking notes, only to forget most of it a week later? If so, you’re not alone–you were likely in a passive learning environment.

In contrast, active learning is where the real magic happens—and it’s the foundation of how I work with individuals and teams.

The difference is more than just style—it’s about impact.

Passive Learning tends to be teacher-centered, lecture-driven, and lacking engagement. Learners are expected to absorb information without interacting with or applying it. As a result, the knowledge gained is often short-lived and hard to translate into real-life situations.

On the other hand, Active Learning is learner-centered and guided by dialogue, focused on reflection, feedback, and skill development, and designed for practical, lasting implementation in both work and life.

My Coaching Practice: Learning by Doing

In my coaching practice, I guide individuals and teams to engage in reflection, examine their lived experiences, and activate higher-order thinking. This means we don’t just talk about leadership theory or team dynamics—we apply it. Together, we explore real challenges, test new approaches, and build the confidence needed to lead with clarity and impact.

The result?
Greater insight, stronger retention, and improved problem-solving that sticks.

Whether you’re an emerging leader or an experienced executive, active learning empowers you to not just know more—but to do more with what you know.

Reach out to elevate your leadership journey and experience active learning in action through the coaching dialogue.
