The Triangular Relationship: Organization, Coach, Client
Written by Suzanne Conroy, M.Ed., CTI, ICF
Learning is an ethical activity.
Professional coaching begins with a clear agreement outlining how and why the coach, client, and sponsor will work together, and their respective rights and responsibilities (International Coach Federation, 2024). The contract includes explicit documentation and dialogue to ensure the boundaries of each dyadic relationship (coach to organization; coach to coachee) and triadic relationship (organization, coach, and coachee) are understood. This ensures trust is upheld and all stakeholders know what will and will not be disclosed.
Transparency regarding the coaching agenda is critical to aligning expectations among all parties.
Employees may be either invited or required to work with a coach for a range of reasons. For example, the organization may wish to develop high performers or support those struggling with performance or interpersonal challenges. There may also be organizational factors contributing to the issue, for instance, unclear role definitions or inadequate structures and processes. The coach works with the whole person, listening to their lived experience, identifying barriers, creating accountability, and enabling learning and transformation. Each dialogue may surface unexpected insights.
Coaching the whole person while aligning with both organizational and individual needs provides direction and coherence to the process.
A defined structure sets ethical expectations and a path forward. Coaching requires transparency, an ethical framework, and application of core competencies to foster excellence and transformative learning.
